The Nature of Kensington

Author: Ted Nelson
Average review score:

nature's glory
This outstanding book celebrates a beautiful area of southern Michigan and Ted Nelson may be to Kensington what Ansel Adams has been to Yosemite. The secret is ----------- Kensington isn't overcrowded. WOW.

Breath Taking!
This book is photographed by a man who has been into Kensington Park for a long time. He has splendid shots of the animals, foliage, and of the skies! It is just beautiful.

Nelson & the Huruburu Bird
Published in Paperback by Wild Honey Press (January, 2003)
Author: Mairead Byrne
Average review score:

a masterpiece of modulation
I read these poems and said yes; yes, there's a brightness, yes, there's a resonant voice, yes, the varied conceptualizations are ingenious, yes, I saw, yes, I touched, yes, it remains. I think there'll be volumes more; Flo-Jo blown into motion.
This volatile stuff is chameleon poetry, dazzling all the cosmic accesories, of verdant verbiage, with wit; the book shook. Read the poetry that's been lived in, its running commentary, investigation, controlled mutation, labor-exploratory station, mad scientist jones.
It's an inventor's notebook, a painter's mannered design, a scholar's close angle, the aviator's dashing plan; blueprints, I mean, of a perspective, the scene. The long poem "The Pillar" stands as a remarkable treatment of the form, its possibilities, near-infinitessimal variation wobble. I bogus U knot...just trust me, if you want to write, join the debate, or read to enlightenment, look for as many vehicles of language as you might conceivably sample, maybe, all the way to customary usage.
Although, the book is something a bit unconventional; dare I say, revolutionary? We see that there's fuel in the underground, storage tanks, sloshing rare brews, blot tests. Where else can you catch sight of the bashful huruburu bird, or, see speedwellbuttercup under the monkey-puzzle tree? Don't you tempt me. I say, raise the cup, pour the libations to poor poetry, vowing a helix of laurels, for another, another day. Find out today, enter, lights on, reaction. Of course, I said yes.

Stellar!
This book is destined, I think, to be considered one of the most important poetry books of the 21st Century in both Ireland and American. I'm not joking. This poet writes as well as -- and often better than -- Plath, Patrick Kavanagh, Bishop, Lorine Niedecker, and Ashbery. These are all very different writers, obviously -- which is in part to say that this writer and the poems in this book are so versatile and disparate in form, content, and style that I am nonplussed and frankly awed by this poet's versatility; her conceptual, lyrical, and narrative gifts are so stellar and strange that I have trouble thinking of Mairéad Byrne as one person.

It is a long first book (128 pages) that reads like a "Selected" volume. The book is divided into three sections: 1. "From _An Interview with Romulus and Remus_"; 2."From _Cycling to Marino_"; 3. "From _The Pillar_" -- which makes me think it is three books in one. The credits and acknowledgements pages are extensive: she's published widely in both Ireland and America, in both countries' best journals. She's been widely anthologized in both Ireland and America.

I see that Wild Honey Press is a new Irish press and that this is its first full length book. And, too, I can see why the press chose to inaugurate or christen its full length publications with this book: this book is absolutely stupendous-and this poet is a major Irish poet; what's more, Mairéad Byrne is a major Irish poet writing as an immigrant in America, writing thus from and in two traditions, in two countries, taking on, getting from, and contributing to the American poetry milieu in ways that I have not seen, and do not expect to see, American authors doing.

The Nelson Companion
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (August, 1995)
Author: Colin White
Average review score:

This is a wonderful book. Up to White's usual high standard.
Colin White works hard so we don't have to. He has saved us having to dig through countless book to find information on persons, events and places that feature prominently, or even incidentally, in Lord Nelson's colourful life. This book will be an invaluable aid to everyone interested in Nelson, the Royal Navy, and the Napoleonic Wars.

Also highly recommended:

Joel Hayward's "For God and Glory: Lord Nelson and His Way of War"

Evan Thomas's "John Paul Jones : Sailor, Hero, Father of the American Navy"

a brilliant introduction to a great man
While visiting Nelson's flagship VICTORY in Portsmouth recently, I asked the guide to recommend a book about Nelson, as I realsied I knew very little about the great man. He told me to buy this excellent book by Colin White - and I'm really glad I did.

Its packed with fascinating facts (did you know, for exapmple that Hitler actually planned to move Nelson's column to Berlin if he defeated Britain?)and some really wonderful illustrations.

Its a really good read and I find I keep going back to it to check on various facts. What's more, its got me reading more books about Nelson!

(PS: Did you know, by the way, that Colin White has written ANOTHER book about Nelson? Its called '1797: Nelson's Year of Destiny' and its all about his exploits at the Battle of Cape St Vincent. I looked for it earlier on the Amazon list but it wasn't there.

Nelson Eddy: The Opera Years
Published in Paperback by Bell Harbour Press (26 November, 2001)
Author: Sharon Rich
Average review score:

Not just a movie star.
Nelson Eddy was the lead baritone for the Philadelphia Opera Co. for over a dozen years before he made a film. It is regretable that he is remembered for 16 motion pictures rather than the operas he sang so beautifully in. This book has all the reviews, showing how the critics loved him,and the responses of the audiences who could never get enough of the young, multi talented baritone. The book covers those first 12 years of his opera career, and shows him to be the first successful cross over artist, going smoothly from opera to popular music without missing a beat.

Excellent book of early career of our Greatest Baritone!
For those who think, like I do, that Nelson Eddy was America's Greatest Baritone, this book is a must. You see how hard Nelson worked to get to the top of his profession, starting with his first professional performance. Sometimes he sang 2 or 3 times a week, and all the reviews and interviews are here. If he had a cold or was flirting onstage with his singing co-star, it's all here. I liked the reproductions from his scrapbooks with his personal comments. After reading the excerpts from Nelson's Chaliapin screenplay, I'm sorry he never had a chance to make that movie. The coverage of Jeanette MacDonald's opera career was equally thorough and interesting, since people tend to diss her (apparently unfairly)as an opera singer. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in either star or in the history of 20th Century American opera.

Tom Pocock's "Horatio Nelson"

Brilliant introduction to a brilliant man!
This is the best book I've read about Nelson in a long time (and I've read quite a few!). Colin White has unearthed a load of new material and has put it together in an accessible and readable form.

There is a first-rate introductory essay sketching out Nelson's life and career and showing how all the new material changes our view of the little admiral. Then there is a series of brilliant short essays on all aspects of his life - his battles, his ships, his women, and so on and so on.

Its one of those books its hard to put down. Each short essay has a "See also" section at the end of it and so you find yourself flipping happily through the book following a fascinating "trail".

Some great illustrations, many of which I'd never seen before and some excellent battle plans, again based on all the latest research. The book looks good too and feels good in your hands

This is not a traditional biography, but don't let that put you off. I guarantee you'll get a huge amount of enjoyment out of it and come away feeling that you have been listening to a man who really understands Nelson.

Nelson Jackson: Cowboy
Published in Hardcover by Directions Production Services Inc (October, 1997)
Authors: Lawanda Randall and Andrew Link
Average review score:

Wonderfully illustrated and a ingenious work.
This book is incredible. I love the way that it is illustrated and captures that particular time period of Nelson Jackson's life. I'm particularly fond of the history of how it all started, with older guys who are mentioned in the books. I believe it gives compensation so to speak to the men who came before Nelson and gives dreams to young ones who could accomplish being a cowboy as well. I have great respect for his children though, who no doubt sacrificed much not having a lot of material possessions as they could have, had their father not have made the choices he did to be a cowboy. However these children, that are pictured in this creative work have gone on to achieve much success of their own. They too have acquired many skills where training and riding are concerned. I'm impressed with the accomplishments of the older daughter Cynthia. I read about her years ago, in a sport page where there was a rodeo in Chicago and her sisters. They always seems to come in first, second and third. No don't they had great training in being competitive and at the same time compassionate for their counter parts. I highly recommend getting this publication, not only for your personal library, but it would make a lovely gift for any young person. The book is well written and illustrated nicely. Great job to the author. Truly a great story of history, and talent of this particular cowboy as well as his family. Awesome!

Nelson Jackson - Cowboy
I found this book to not only be educational, but also inspiring for young people. It gives you information crucial to understanding some of the equipment use in rodeo life, as well as indoctrinate young children on the history of one man's spirit. I contemplate that this book, NELSON JACKSON - COWBOY will inspire many children and adults to enjoy horses and the whole rodeo atmosphere while gaining a deeper respect for those who make sacrifices to live out their dreams. This is a book which will allow many to sit back and enjoy history if you will, while at the same time attaining an appreciation for all who make up America. I will continue to enjoy this book, for years to come.

Should have bought this sooner
This would have saved me a headache or two. It gives the pronounciation from both sides of the language and gives extensive word usages throughout.

Simply put: The very best ever / Simplemente el mejor !
The New Velazquez Spanish and English Dictionary is the best bilingual dictionary I've ever used. It's richness, in depth presentation of nouns, adjectives and verbs, its selection of examples, local and common expresions, pronunciation, presentation and format, etc., they all make this dictionary to standout by itself among the rest. I strongly recommend it to anyone for business, college or home. This is a Mr. Bilingual Dictionary! The price at Amazon.com is fair. The value of the book its unlimited. Really a piece of jewelry! Lincoln Mejia Raleigh, NC. --------------------------------------
